Blackjack's Blog: FDU Falls to Merrimack inside Rothmann

HACKENSACK, NJ- Two weeks ago, the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights traveled for the first time ever in NEC play to Merrimack College and nearly pulled off the upset, losing in 2OT’s 74-71. Tonight though, the Knights kept the Warriors close for most of the game but was unable to get over the hump late to send the game in OT once again. The result remained the same with Merrimack on top at the final buzzer, 57-53. The lead changed hands 4 times and the Knights had a chance to tie the game at 55 in the final moments but a drive to the basket fell short and the whistle blew against them. The ensuing two final free throws iced the victory for the Warriors who advanced to 16-8 on the season and more importantly 10-1 in the Northeast Conference. FDU fell to 6-16 and 4-7 in the NEC. Merrimack was led by senior F Idris Joyner (16 points/4 rebounds/3 blocked shots) and junior G/F Devin Jensen (15 points- 5 for 7 on 3’s AND free throws). The Knights were led by redshirt junior Xzavier Malone-Key (13 points, 5 rebounds) and senior F Kaleb Bishop (11 points, 7 rebounds).

The Knights have a week off then welcome Wagner College to the Rothman Center next Thursday February 13th completing a 3-game home stand.

NOTES- Legendary St. Anthony’s basketball coach Bob Hurley attended the game tonight as 4 of his former players at the now-defunct program in Jersey City played in the game. FDU Knight Kaleb Bishop joined former St. Anthony’s teammates Juvaris Hayes, Jaleel Lord and Idris Joyner now on Merrimack for many post-game photos with Coach Hurley and family.
